Indication:

This drug is used with other HIV medications to help control HIV infection. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. This lowers your chance of getting HIV complications (such as new infections, cancer) and improves your quality of life. Vitekta (Elvitegravir) belongs to a class of drugs known as integrase inhibitors. It blocks the virus from growing and infecting more cells.

Mechanism of action:

Vitekta (Elvitegravir) is an HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI). Integrase is an HIV-1 encoded enzyme that is required for viral replication. Inhibition of integrase prevents the integration of HIV-1 DNA into host genomic DNA, blocking the formation of the HIV-1 provirus and propagation of the viral infection. Vitekta (Elvitegravir) does not inhibit human topoisomerases I or II.

Dosage and Administration:

Use Vitekta (Elvitegravir) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

·         An extra patient leaflet is available with Vitekta (Elvitegravir). Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.

·         Take Vitekta (Elvitegravir) by mouth with food.

·         If you are also taking didanosine, take it at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after Vitekta (Elvitegravir).

·         Do not take an antacid within 2 hours before or after you take Vitekta (Elvitegravir).

·         Continue to take Vitekta (Elvitegravir) even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Vitekta (Elvitegravir).

Side effects:

Diarrhea may occur. If this effect persists or worsens, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Precaution:

Before taking Vitekta (Elvitegravir), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Store:

Store Vitekta (Elvitegravir) at room temperature, below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). Store in the original container away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not use if the seal on the bottle is broken or missing. Keep Vitekta (Elvitegravir) out of the reach of children and away from pets.
